Influence of arc chamber parameters on passive resonance circuit of HVDC circuit breakers

HVDC circuit breaker with sufficient interruption capability and interruption speed, as a key technology to enable HVDC transmission in meshed multi terminal networks do not yet exist. AC circuit breakers in combination with a passive resonance path are used to build HVDC breakers even though the requirements for AC breaking strongly differ from requirements for DC current interruption. Current zero is reached automatically in AC circuits, therefore it is sufficient to optimize the arc chamber for maximal cooling around current zero and fast recovery of the dielectric strength after arc extinction. In DC arc chambers cooling is critical for the excitation of resonance circuit instability at large currents, that is required for creation of artificial current zero crossings.
